November is Diabetes Awareness Month!

Diabetes can increase the risk of dental diseases and other oral symptoms. 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes & 1 in 5 cases of tooth loss is diabetes-linked.

1. Gum disease

High blood sugar levels can increase the risk of gum disease. It is important to maintain a healthy  blood sugar level to reduce any risk.

2. Dry mouth

High blood sugar levels and medications can lead to dry mouth and cause cavities. Drink water to alleviate symptoms.

3. Change in Taste

Adding too much sugar to enhance flavor can lead to cavities.

4. Infections

Diabetes affects the immune system and makes it more vulnerable to infections. Oral thrust, a yeast infection, is common among people with diabetes and it is due to high amounts of sugar in the saliva.

5. Slow Healing

A poor control of blood sugar levels can lead to trouble with healing a cold sore or a cut in the mouth.
