Dental Fluorosis Caused By Too Much Fluoride

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral added to toothpastes and drinking water around the world to prevent cavities by promoting mineralization. Low levels strengthen and protects the enamel, however, high levels can cause dental fluorosis commonly noted by discoloration. Dental fluorosis is a form of tooth decay due to poor mineralization. This occurs more often in children exposed to high levels of fluoride from birth to about the age of 9. The CDC estimated ~25% of the U.S. population aged 6-49 have some degree of dental fluorosis.
