Researchers have extracted preserved milk specific proteins within ancient dental calculus - dental plaque that has been mineralized and hardened over time!
The earliest milk proteins within the study were identified in present day Sudan ~6,000 years ago. The results show an importance for goats and sheep as sources of milk for early herding communities in more arid environments such as Africa.
